Equipoise Companies, Inc., an African American
family-owned corporation, is located in Maywood, IL, just 13 miles west
of the Chicago Loop. The company opened its doors in June of 1980
with its premiere home-based subsidiary, Li-Ca Press, a publishing company.
The administrative staff intensively researched business enterprises that
provided common products and services to the consumer like dentistry, cosmetology,
auto repair and maintenance, food service, hospitality, etc. The
research resulted in price comparisons and breakdowns by neighborhood and
industry.
At completion the information was compiled and
categorized according to pricing and published in a small booklet, "The
Best Deals Around©".
The booklet listed the five lowest prices in each industry, and represented
various businesses in Chicago and its outlying suburbs. The information
was compiled and typed by the company's family-comprised staff. Marketing
consisted of flyers hand delivered door-to-door by the family's children
and the children's neighborhood friends. The booklet was a good seller,
but publication halted when the company's management decided to undertake
other endeavors.
By 1984 four components were added --- concert
promotion, lyric composition, product marketing and typing for individual
and corporate clientele. It was at this time that the company recognized
its interest in many areas, from typing resumes, letters, various educational
reports and newsletters, to involvement in real estate sales and investments.
By 1993 the company was completely diversified and had begun to provide
products and services in these areas and many others added on down through
the years.
Equipoise Companies, Inc. is the hub of its subsidiary
companies and is positioned as the executive department relative to decisions
which determine the responsibilities of each subsidiary. It's appointed
administrative department is ECI Corporation, which implements decisions
made by Equipoise Companies, Inc. and its Board of Directors.
